Pattern Name: Diamond Bow Tie
Age: 1890s-1910
Quilting: hand-quilted with a Baptist fan quilting; hand-pieced
Material: turkey red, blue, cheddar and white solid and printed calico shirting, plant-dyed calicos, and a dark solid indigo background
Measurements: 78x66
Heritage: This quilt was found in Ohio. From the same collection as the Wagon Wheel and Nine Patch Variation. The woman that made these quilts had an AMAZING eye for geometry. This quilt is a more tradition bow tie variation, however the dark blue background is quite stunning. The amount of solid blue fabric is quite rare for a piece like this. Of special note are the outstanding cheddar bow ties strewn throughout the piece. The fabrics are a wonderful collection of moody blues and all manner of shirtings and indigo-dyed calicos. There are wonderful cinnamon reds as well. The homespun backing is also fantastic and quite complimentary on the quilt.
Condition: Overall the piece is in great condition for its age. There are a few seam separations and a few spots of fabric wear. There is also some wear to the edge of the quilt. This is normal given the age of the piece. The quilt is thick and sturdy. Overall, the quilt is still in great condition. Great care was taken to store and care for the quilt. With proper care, it will last many more years.
