Thank you for starting this journey together to preserve your heritage piece! Please read all information below so you know the commission process.

IMPORTANT

1. This listing is for a non-refundable deposit only. Please do not purchase a spot unless you are SURE you want to move through the commission process. When your coat is completed I will send an invoice via this website for the balance.

2. Your spot is not reserved until you pay the deposit and make sure you have made all of the necessary selections. Please feel free to tell me anything important about your piece!

3. If you do not have a quilt, please send me an email so we can find you a good one!

The Process

1. Once you have paid your deposit, I will send you a private message with my shipping address for your quilt.

2. Once I receive your quilt, I will send a confirmation email to discuss and agree to the final layout of your piece. This will allow us to be on the same page and I can answer any questions or review any special requests you might have.

3. Next, I will get to work and make your coat! Shipping times will vary, but generally, your coat will return to you within 6-8 weeks of receiving your quilt.

CANCELLATIONS

1. I do not offer cancellations or returns on custom work.

2. As slots are limited and go rather quickly, please do not purchase a commission unless you intend to use it. Deposits are nonrefundable

3. If I do not receive your quilt within 14 business days of your purchase, your spot will be forfeited and your deposit will not be refunded. If there is an issue in shipping or finding a quilt, please let me know as soon as possible. I am happy to work with you! If I supply the quilt there is an additional $50.

COMMISSION DETAILS

Total Cost: $425 (this includes repair-as-needed to your quilt, sewing labor and shipping)

Style: I currently offer two customizable styles - the shawl collar (regular or duster) and the Mission Jacket (regular or duster)

Choosing Your Quilt: I recommend that you choose thinner, three-season quilts for your coat. I am happy to work with thicker quilts (and these turn out beautifully, by the way), but a general rule of thumb is the thicker the quilt, the bulkier it will be on the body. I also recommend that the quilt is in good structural condition. I frequently work with antique quilts that have a lot of holes, wear, and tear. I can work around most of these issues and these make *lovely* coats. However, if the quilt has dry rot or if the threads rip easily when you pull them - that's not a good coat candidate. A gentle tug in several directions will tell you the quilt's soundness. If you have questions, send me an email!

  • As long as you remember that you are wearing a piece of history, you’ll be just fine!.  Antique garments have been here for decades and with a bit of care can last even more!

    1. The best and safest way to clean is the historical way: turning the garment inside out and hanging it in the warm sun for a day or two.

    2. Spot clean with a bit of Palm Olive (or other gentle soap) and cold water.

    3. As needed (and no more than 1x per year), clean using Palm Olive and cold water:

    • Soak in cold water with a bit of soap.

    • Gently agitate.

    • Let sit for 20 minutes.

    • Rinse and repeat with only water until the water is clear

    4.  Store coat in the off-season laying flat.  Some people wrap them in an old pillowcase for added protection.

    5.  Patch and mend as necessary!  You are adding to the history of the piece.  Don’t be afraid to fix and repair as you see fit.
